or involving students in the reforestation of a local park and strengthening ties with the community through drama.

Teaching team Sally Putman, Janyce Frost and Carmen Brincat-Cotton know the value of working together. By supporting one another’s visions, this team has successfully strengthened students’ ties with the community. In collaboration with local authorities, students at Lenswood Primary have gained a greater awareness of the environment by being involved in the revegetation of Lenswood Recreation Park.

Teachers also encourage the local community to become involved in the school’s drama productions. Members of the local community offer advice to students in areas such as promotion, sound, lighting and stage management.

Elisa Cosentino

Primary

St Gabriel’s Primary School
, Enfield

or promoting an active lifestyle to students through community sports.

‘Be active and healthy’ is the message Eliza Cosentino and Mary Wyrzykowski, teachers at St Gabriel’s Primary School, promote to students.

Identifying a need for affordable sporting activities in the community, Eliza and Mary developed a regional sporting competition. It has proved a huge success with 11 schools and more than 850 children now participating in the program. Winning a grant also helped in establishing a health day program, where community-based sporting associations ran mini-clinics at the school.

Susan Ellis

Primary

Encounter Lutheran School, Victor Harbor

for broadening students understanding of community needs and responsibilities.

Susan Ellis, teacher at Encounter Lutheran School for the past six years, adds value to children’s education by strengthening teacher partnerships with parents and the community.

Designing and developing parent workshops as well as facilitating a busy and active Junior Red Cross Group are among Susan’s significant achievements. The school’s Junior Red Cross Group has generated amazing results, not only in raising $14,000 for the Tsunami Appeal, but in broadening students’ understanding of community.

Mark Prokopec

Primary

Catherine McAuley School, Craigmore

for continuing the tradition of caring for the disadvantaged.

Mark Prokopec has been teaching for almost 30 years and is continuing the tradition of Catherine McAuley in caring for the disadvantaged. Mark encourages students to donate ingredients and become actively involved in the making of soup, which is then distributed to the disadvantaged.

Mark’s dedication also includes organising students, parents and a local nursing home to contribute to the making of knitted blankets. The blankets are then donated to the St Vincent de Paul Society.

John Shelton

Secondary

Millicent High School, Millicent

for promoting resilience, leadership and self-esteem in students through the Community Mentor Program.

John Shelton, principal and teacher at Millicent High School, has been the driving force behind the Community Mentor Program. The program aims to connect students with a member of the community to assist them in achieving their potential. It continues to grow from strength to strength with more than 26 mentors now actively participating.

John’s enthusiasm doesn’t stop there. Establishing links with the local disability service, to enable students to gain experience in the disability sector and provide opportunities for work experience, and encouraging a liaison program with the local police are among the initiatives John has implemented to promote resilience, leadership and self-esteem in students.
