for innovative teaching programs that link students’ learning to the community.
Mrs Paternoster was nominated by parents for using children’s own interests to make learning an enjoyable
experience. As Essential Learning Project Officer, she led teachers in planning and implementing whole school
units such as - Tasmania 200 Years - What Have We Achieved? This involved the whole community through
providing historic photos and memorabilia. Mrs Paternoster also co-ordinated a fundraiser for the local
RSPCA and has invited local RSL club members to speak at school assemblies.

for commitment to forming partnerships between the school and wider community and for involving parents in their children’s
education.
Mrs Rhodes has initiated many relationships between local kindergartens, the local indigenous community and
early childhood centres in order to encourage children in the community to form strong friendships. These
relationships have helped the school to embrace and support parents and children from birth to adulthood, and
has been an enormous benefit to the whole community. Mrs Rhodes also initiated a support group for parents of
children with special needs, a resource that had been greatly needed but lacking in the Huon region.

for encouraging students to achieve and for involving the school in the wider
community.
Mrs Simons’ strong interest in the arts is reflected in her role as co-ordinator of a large annual community art
exhibition, and she organises and arranges for children’s art work to be displayed throughout the school and
community. Mrs Simons is also a member of the school’s Canteen, Grounds and Social Committees.

for commitment to community involvement and encouraging students’ development as
citizens.
Mrs Smith has involved her students in a large number of community projects that come under the umbrella of
Civics and Citizen Education. Students celebrated the Centenary of Federation at a special assembly, led
ANZAC Day services for the school and wider community, attended dawn services and marched on
ANZAC Day, formed a partnership with a local seniors’ home and hosted a ‘good citizen’ morning tea for
students to invite someone they thought had qualities of a good citizen. Mrs Smith’s projects demonstrate that
through community involvement some very powerful learning occurs.

for encouraging students to be responsible citizens.
Mrs Vaughan initiated a program of mentored volunteering, where students become informed about
social issues of inequality, disability, prejudice, respect and dignity. Students keep a journal and share their
reflections and experiences, helping them to understand others’ strengths and limitations, and provide benefits to
the community through their attempt to meet the specific care, support and assistance people need.
