Princes Street Primary
School,
Sandy Bay
for developing projects that help parents and children in establishing community friendships.
Monique Carter, acting principal and teacher of 17 years, has been instrumental in developing projects that help parents and children adapt to a school environment and establish friendships within the community. Story Magic, a program developed for children up to four years of age, encourages children to socialise, enjoy books and become familiar with a school environment before beginning school. Monique seeks community donations of books to form part of the Story Magic library.
The annual community breakfast, involving past and present school members, and a fundraising event, Family Fun Night, involving the wider community, are other examples of Monique’s commitment, not only to students and the school but also to the community.

Woodbridge School,
Woodbridge
for creating environmentally responsible citizens.
As the environmental studies teacher at Woodbridge School, Nel Smit has been the driving force behind the school’s accomplishments in environmental sustainability. The coastal rehabilitation program, designed to transform the local foreshore, is one outstanding example of how the school community and the broader community have worked together and fostered a strong sense of pride and responsibility in students.
Nel and students, armed with a Green Corps team and many community volunteers, have planted in excess of 1000 plants, and the community has also been involved in other projects initiated by Nel. Among these are the Frog Project, the Seed to Plate program and the Water Care project.
