Mrs Mary Rawson of St. Joseph's Tobruk Memorial
School, Beenleigh received this accolade from one of her nominators - "In Brisbane
Catholic Education the name of Mary Rawson is synonomous with excellence in teaching. She
is looked upon as a person whose competence and sensitivity as a teacher is second to
none." A video of Mary's classroom and teaching style has been distributed in
Catholic Schools throughout the Archdiocese.
Mr Francesco Arcidiacono of Stanthorpe State
High School initiated an Italian Immersion program in 1995 - the first program of its kind
in any Australian school, which has seen students taught Mathematics and Science in the
Italian language. Graduates of the elective program have spent a month in Italy with host
families as a culmination of their education. Franco has been teaching for 20 years and
holds both a Masters in education specialising in second language teaching and a Graduate
Diploma in Multi-Cultural Education.
Mrs Jill Bourke of St.Colman's School, Home
Hill says that parents have been welcome in her classroom for 25 years and this has helped
to facilitate a regular reading program, with parent helpers throughout the school, and a
guitar teaching program for all children in Years 5-7. Jill plans the School's Italian
Day, recognising the cultural background of nearly two-thirds of the student body.
Mrs Lynne Hinton, the Teaching Principal
at Buranda Primary School, a small multi-cultural school in inner Brisbane , heads a team
which in the words of her nominators has led to the school "being
revitalised, with a
growing reputation for innovative and challenging programs, and strong community
support." Teaching at Buranda extends beyond the classroom to the permaculture
garden, the rainforest, the creek at the back and the adventure playground.
Ms Elizabeth Stunden of Kaluin State
School, Maroochydore introduced a Gifted and Talented Program and initiated Kaluin's
long-term involvement with the Tournament of the Minds. Kaluin is a regular State finalist
and is currently National Champion for the second year in succession. Elizabeth is a
"Connect-Ed" teacher, has trained in computer technology and conducts in-service
training for her colleagues at her own school and others.
Mrs Louise Ross who teaches at
Dalby State High School received her nomination last year while acting as head of the
English Department at Dalby State High School. At Dalby, she successfully established an
effective Reader Support Program for over 40 students involving 15 trained parent and
community tutors. Her leadership established the Bunya Mountains Writers' Camp for Gifted
and Talented students from both primary and secondary schools in the Dalby Cluster (years
7-12) leading to the production of a published anthology - "Bunya Inspirations."

For the second time, an English teacher from Kelvin Grove
State High School received a Regional Award. Ms Christine Poulson was recognised for her
imaginative and inspirational approach to teaching. Words and images written and produced
by her students adorn the walls, fixtures and ceiling of her classroom. Her innovative
creative writing course - "The Language of the Night" is currently running with
three capacity classes and students booking ahead to secure placement.
The former Queensland Minister for Education, the Hon. Bob
Quinn, MLA presented the awards. He told the teachers: "To be nominated indicates
that you're highly respected and well-liked in the community and that your enthusiasm and
skills are respected. It means that you are teaching in a way that meets the needs of your
students and helps them to develop into productive citizens."
