Queensland teachers receiving awards at the Regional awards ceremony held at the Parkroyal Hotel, Brisbane on 21 May were drawn from across the State and included several praised for their outstanding career contributions to teaching.

Mrs Mary Rawson of St. Joseph's Tobruk Memorial School, Beenleigh received this accolade from one of her nominators - "In Brisbane Catholic Education the name of Mary Rawson is synonomous with excellence in teaching. She is looked upon as a person whose competence and sensitivity as a teacher is second to none." A video of Mary's classroom and teaching style has been distributed in Catholic Schools throughout the Archdiocese.

Mr Francesco Arcidiacono of Stanthorpe State High School initiated an Italian Immersion program in 1995 - the first program of its kind in any Australian school, which has seen students taught Mathematics and Science in the Italian language. Franco has been teaching for 20 years and holds both a Masters in education specialising in second language teaching and a Graduate Diploma in Multi-Cultural Education.

Mrs Jill Bourke of St.Colman's School, Home Hill says that parents have been welcome in her classroom for 25 years and this has helped to facilitate a regular reading program, with parent helpers throughout the school, and a guitar teaching program for all children in Years 5-7. Jill plans the School's Italian Day, recognising the cultural background of nearly two-thirds of the student body.

Mrs Lynne Hinton, the Teaching Principal at Buranda Primary School, a small multi-cultural school in inner Brisbane , heads a team which in the words of her nominators has led to the school "being revitalised, with a growing reputation for innovative and challenging programs, and strong community support." Teaching at Buranda extends beyond the classroom to the permaculture garden, the rainforest, the creek at the back and the adventure playground.

Ms Elizabeth Stunden of Kaluin State School, Maroochydore introduced a Gifted and Talented Program and initiated Kaluin's long-term involvement with the Tournament of the Minds. Kaluin is a regular State finalist and is currently National Champion for the second year in succession. Elizabeth is a "Connect-Ed" teacher, has trained in computer technology and conducts in-service training for her colleagues at her own school and others.

Mrs Louise Ross who teaches at Dalby State High School received her nomination last year while acting as head of the English Department at Dalby State High School. At Dalby, she successfully established an effective Reader Support Program for over 40 students involving 15 trained parent and community tutors. For the second time, an English teacher from Kelvin Grove State High School received a Regional Award. Ms Christine Poulson was recognised for her imaginative and inspirational approach to teaching. Words and images written and produced by her students adorn the walls, fixtures and ceiling of her classroom. Her innovative creative writing course - "The Language of the Night" is currently running with three capacity classes and students booking ahead to secure placement.

The former Queensland Minister for Education, the Hon. Bob Quinn, MLA presented the awards. He told the teachers: "To be nominated indicates that you're highly respected and well-liked in the community and that your enthusiasm and skills are respected. It means that you are teaching in a way that meets the needs of your students and helps them to develop into productive citizens."
