Victoria / Tasmania:

Innovation Wins Praise

Innovation and creativity were key qualities common to many of the recipients of the Victorian and Tasmanian Regional Awards conferred at the Melbourne Centra Hotel on 14 May.

Secondary school teachers receiving awards were praised for their initiatives ranging from a wooden boat building program as a practical exercise in life skills at Geeveston High School in southern Tasmania to an Internet publishing project - "Faces of War" collecting student writing and artworks from over five countries.

Exemplifying these trends, Mr Michael McLean of Flinders Christian Community College received award for his teaching approach to "expose students to a range of resources and activities which develop their curiosity and help them to see the world as their classroom." Last year, he hosted a Regional Schools Constitutional Convention for the Mornington Peninsula from which 2 students attended the State Constitutional Convention as youth representatives.

Mr Stephen Fisher of Rosebud Primary School has established and continues to run a physical education and sporting program in the southern peninsula district which has given many thousands of children opportunities to participate in 14 team sports plus triathalon, golf, tennis, swimming, athletics and cross-country. He introduced a Water Safety/Recreation Program some 15 years ago which has developed life skills in surf skiing, surfing, snorkelling, boating and first aid. Parents and students respect and admire him for his example, inspiration and leadership.

Mrs Andrea Gatward of Cambridge primary School in southern Tasmania has been involved in developing Key intended Numeracy outcomes and trialling different modes of utilising computer technology in her Years 5 and 6 classroom. Her recognised practice in the area of integrated curriculum resulted in her writing for the Curriculum Corporation publication - "Oodles of Noodles" - adopted in most Tasmanian primary schools.

Awards to Victorian and Tasmanian teachers were presented on behalf of the NEiTA Foundation by a representative of the Victorian Minister for Education, the Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Mr Stephen Elder,MLA.

The Tasmanian Minister for Education and Vocational Training, the Hon. Sue Napier, MHA sent a message to the ceremony. She said, "These awards have done much to help raise the profile and standing of the teaching profession in the wider Australian community.

"However worthy the policies which Governments and Education Departments devise, the test of their success ultimately rests with the thousands of teachers throughout Australia working each day with the students in their classes.

"I am happy to publicly acknowledge the outstanding quality of Tasmanian teachers in particular, and to commend them on their dedicated commitment to the growth and development of Tasmania's young people."
