Exemplifying these trends, Mr
Michael McLean of Flinders Christian Community College received award for his
teaching approach to "expose students to a range of resources and
activities which develop their curiosity and help them to see the world as
their classroom." Last year, he hosted a Regional Schools Constitutional
Convention for the Mornington Peninsula from which 2 students attended the
State Constitutional Convention as youth representatives.

Mr Stephen Fisher of Rosebud
Primary School has established and continues to run a physical education and
sporting program in the southern peninsula district which has given many
thousands of children opportunities to participate in 14 team sports plus
triathalon, golf, tennis, swimming, athletics and cross-country. He introduced
a Water Safety/Recreation Program some 15 years ago which has developed life
skills in surf skiing, surfing, snorkelling, boating and first aid. Parents
and students respect and admire him for his example, inspiration and
leadership.
Mrs Andrea Gatward of Cambridge
primary School in southern Tasmania has been involved in developing Key
intended Numeracy outcomes and trialling different modes of utilising computer
technology in her Years 5 and 6 classroom. Her recognised practice in the area
of integrated curriculum resulted in her writing for the Curriculum
Corporation publication - "Oodles of Noodles" - adopted in most
Tasmanian primary schools.
Awards to Victorian and Tasmanian teachers were presented on behalf of
the NEiTA Foundation by a representative of the Victorian Minister for
Education, the Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Mr Stephen Elder,MLA.
The Tasmanian Minister for Education and Vocational Training, the Hon. Sue
Napier, MHA sent a message to the ceremony. She said, "These awards have
done much to help raise the profile and standing of the teaching profession in
the wider Australian community.
"However worthy the policies which Governments and Education
Departments devise, the test of their success ultimately rests with the
thousands of teachers throughout Australia working each day with the students
in their classes.
"I am happy to publicly acknowledge the outstanding quality of
Tasmanian teachers in particular, and to commend them on their dedicated
commitment to the growth and development of Tasmania's young people."
