21 NZ teachers and leaders receive regional
awards
From 650 nominations, 21 teachers and leaders have been selected as regional recipients of an
ASG Excellence in Teaching Award or a Cognition Education Excellence in Leadership
Award.
These teachers, their principals and family members, joined their Members of Parliament and heads
of education organisations as guests of the NEiTA Foundation at a gala awards luncheon at
Parliament's Grand Hall.
One Leadership awardee, Brother Steve Hogan, formerly principal at
De La Salle College, Auckland, could not attend the awards as he has recently taken on a new
leadership role as principal of De La Salle College in Hong Kong.

"Inspirational teachers and
leaders encourage learning by reaching out to every young person in their care.
As parents, you know who has made a difference for your child. I urge you to
nominate them to show your appreciation of their excellence as teachers and
leaders."
(Hon Anne Tolley
Minister of Education)

THE NEiTA FOUNDATION
was
formed in 1994 by the Australian Scholarships Group to conduct a program
of National Awards honouring exemplary teachers in Australian and New
Zealand schools
and early childhood centres.
The awards promote public recognition of the teaching profession and
specifically those teachers who have demonstrated excellence and commitment in their work.

|
The program calls on individual parents,
parent organisations, boards of trustees, management committees, secondary student
councils and community organisations, to identify teachers and leaders who are an inspiration to their
students, to their peers and to their communities.

"Highly effective teachers are
critical to achieving the goal of all students, without exception, achieving to a high standard.
These awards give us, as parents and members of Boards of Trustees, the
opportunity to positively acknowledge those teachers who leave no stone unturned in
their quest to ensure all their students succeed. As board members, we are in an ideal
position to identify our highly effective teachers, nominate them, and encourage them, as
they in turn encourage our children. The nomination process is not onerous; and of
course identifying and recognising true excellence in teaching and leadership will
provide real examples of excellence and effectiveness that will encourage others to
aspire to, to the ultimate benefit of all students/school community members as higher
expectations and standards of teaching are achieved."
(Lorraine Kerr President
NZ School Trustees Association)
